This place just blew my mind. Walking down I was expecting to be sat on the edge of a cliff, remote from the sea, disconnected. What we actually found was the land sliding down into the sea, with a modicum of scrambling, access was found!

I've been to cliffy type places before, namely St. Abbs and it's surroundings, but nothing really prepared me for this place. Everything was huge! From the massive rocks, scattered like toys to the booms as water is forced down channels under the rocks. Booms you could feel through the ground as the rocks shifted.

Perhaps the Atlantic, unhindered by obstacle, using it's full strength to smash against the rocks is what gives the place the ominous feeling of power. Perhaps it's the impression of rocks tossed casually aside by capricious gods is wot dun it!

This certainly gave me a better understanding of Ross's love of Lewis.

I know places like this are ten a penny around the world, hell even around Scotland but, as I said, I've never been anywhere like this - at least not as an interested spectator with a camera.

I'm not sure why but there isn't much of a sense of scale in the photo, the lighthouse helps but the little drop in front of the camera would have been instant death to the unwary! And Ross and I where VERY wary :) It might be because of the wide-angle lens, or it could be the nature of photography itself, more likely it's just my lack of skill in imbuing the image with scale.

I want to be back there. Right now!

The Hermits Castle on the coastline near Achmelvich is apparently Europe's smallest castle.

Built of concrete it's the work of one man, and English architect (or artist, accounts vary) named David Scott. He built the castle himself in the 1950 for reasons which are unknown today. Once completed he stayed there a few nights before disappearing.

I went inside, quite surprised I fit through the narrow doorway ;) and inside there's a concrete bed and a fireplace with just enough room to swing a cat if you don't mind it getting concussed!

One of my Flickr contacts posted a shot from here and I chimped! :) I thought the wall was a really interesting shape, so I added this place to the "must visits".

I was going to go a few weeks ago but a sudden attack of lazyitis had me bedridden. This weekend I decided that I was going. The tide would be in, the weather man made a prediction which, as it turned out was wrong but at least it sounded about perfect. So I set my alarm for 5am and headed out at about 5:30am.

I arrived nice an early and was able to start shooting before the big yella fella even hit the horizon.

I also bumped into a couple of Flickerites who had the same idea so that gave us all a chance to chat while shooting which was nice.

Anyhoo, below you'll see the shots in the order they where taken.

August 2011, The Leithies

The trip to The Leithies in North Berwick was with a specific shot in mind. I'd recently been out doing some Image Averaging test shots for the tutorial I wrote. One of the comments on Flickr suggested a crop with Just the Bass Rock - Sadly that'd have ment loosing far too many pixels - the image was already square cropped. So it meant re-shooting.

So there I was, too cheap to pay the £2 entry into Seacliff, unable to find somewhere to park to go down to Canty Bay and intimidated by the "Geroff Moi Land" signs near Castleton that I decided to go back to The Leithies instead.

Spent about an hour and a half there till just after sunset.

What is odd is I took 9 distinct shots and all 9 where deemed worthy of processing. There's a couple I'm not particularly excited about and they are all a bit samey but it was definately a better hit rate than my usual.

Aberdour Pier

I thought this was an interesting panorama. It's panoramic in the sense of the technique used to create the image. It's two images stitched together vertically..

"layers" has a a few interpretations. Photographically speaking the layers can refer to both the distant and foreground rocks, but there's also a meaning in terms of the time between when the two rock formations and even the processes by which they where created. Then of course the more obvious textural interpretation.

I think when I saw them together I was thinking more in terms of the near and foreground subjects.

The rock on the left is the east side of a sandstone outcrop called The Gegan while the background rock is a volcanic plug called the Bass Rock. This was shot from Seacliff Beach in East Lothian on a winters afternoon.

This shot was a real pest to do - not that I consider it finished yet. I visited the place about 4 times hoping for the correct tide level. When I arrived that day the water was more than half way up the bridge so I decided to hang around to find out what time the tide was perfect. From there I could use tide table to work out the tide height and therefore revisit any time.

So... 5.4 meters! Or there about :)

This is shot on Kirkcaldy beach - near the crumbling breakwater at Seafield.

When I looked at the area I was immediately struck by the way it looked like a miniature landscape. I also liked the stripes of the different coloured gravels which is also echoed in the layers of sandstone that make up the "shoreline".

5am wakeup to get over to Dysart in time for the sunrise - the sunrise that never was!

Part photograph, part painting, I went to a specific location to try and get the moon rise in the curve of the Bass Rock. Sadly I didn't quite get the correct placement.

I was pretty dissapointed with the photography so I did some Blue Fin Art esq painting and blurring on the sky and sea which while it does inherit tones and colours from the original photography, they aren't quite so saturated.

This is my most stolen image. Aside from being ripped off wholesale by clickbait wallpaper sites I occasionally have an image that gets stolen for it's actual content. This is one of those. So far, it's been knicked by a writers club, some IT management company and a blog.

None of them bothered asking, which is a shame as I might have licenced it for free. Well maybe not the company but never the less it is nice to be asked first.

When I chased one of them up about it they claimed they couldn't find ownership information for the version of the image they had. I should point out at this point, the version they used, they cropped and removed the watermark. Not that that matters, when you search even with the version they had, the results take you straight to this site.

And in any case, this particular shot was uploaded to 3 places. Here, Flickr and Panoramio. All of them contain methods to contact me, so how anyone can suggest they "searched for the owner but couldn't find contact information" suggests either a lie or ineptitude. I'll leave it for you to decide which.

You might recognise this as the location for the starting scene in Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves. You know, the one with that bloody song!

I took the same shot as him as an exercise in comparing how our post processing techniques differ.
