I went up to Aberdeen to act as "the muscle" when a friend went to collect payment for services rendered selling his bike. I also took the opportunity to scout a location I noticed years ago in Panoramio.

The shot below is pretty close to where I want to shoot - I was wearing silly shoes for walking over slippy rocks so didn't get quite where I wanted to go. Plus the weather was "meh...". Anyway, the thing of interest to me is the small sea stack at the middle left of the frame. A revisit here, moving about 10ft forward and some better weather is in order!

Howdy campers.

Been a while since I was last out - September 2012 to be exact!

In this trip Ross and I headed down to Dunstanburgh Castle via Cocklawburn (or is it Cockburnlaw) Beach.

As ever, I spent the day Image Averaging although I did have a go on Ross's Lee Big Stopper for a few shots.

Talking of the Lee Big Stopper, I can say it's easier to use the LBS over a Screw-on ND like the B+W 110 ND when used with Graduated ND's, it's still not as easy as the image averaging technique - workflow aside.

I got a horrible amount of flare when I used the LBS - light reflected off the grads and into the lens - but this was my mistake. Next time I'll use my patented* light baffle to see if that helps any.

I also found the LBS was much MUCH stronger than my B+W 110 ND. I was doing 45s exposures with the B+W while a few minutes later with the LBS I required around 3 minutes! That said, with the LBS I was also using my Grads so the difference may be explained by that.

As for the white balance correction. Well, I maxed out the WB in ACR to 50,000 and while the final colour was neutral enough, I couldn't warm it up any further in ACR. I'm afraid I much prefer the warming cast on the B+W which is also more easilly warmed further or cooled to near LBS levels of icey cold blue!

Overall though it was awesome to be out again, with big thanks to the peco for dragging my sorry ass out! :)

Twas a surprise outing on a school night for Peco & I. I got the call about 4pm. "Find a place that isn't too far, leaving in 30mins"

Shit! :) Happy "shit" of course.

Sadly I wasn't able to come up with much in the way of originality - Dunbar... Still, I wanted to go to the far end of the harbour wall and get round the back. When we wandered along the place was plastered with "DANGER WILL ROBINSON" signs and us being the good citizens we are, we didn't go any further.

I was gutted. I was sure you could get round*.

So we went round the back of the old artillery battery at Victoria Harbour and hopped about the rocks there.

So anyway, here's the shots for the trip, only the 4 of them as it was such a short outing...

I was using Wordpress for my blogging software but I never really enjoyed using it. It's fast and clean but almost every update that's come out over the few years running it, broke something somewhere.

The last straw was the 3.1 (i think) update. After that I couldn't save or preview changes to any new or old posts.

In any case, I quite like to sprinkle my images around my blog posts but I found WP a bit of a pain because I use a custom written gallery and I'd have had to constantly fiddle with html and urls to lay the images out how I like. This usually means a ton of web pages open and lots of copying of image links... yawn.

With my own blog system, it has direct access to my images so it's really simple to plop them in a post.

Toys for the bored

I also added a little toy to play with. It'll probably kill my bandwidth so might get switched off shortly :) Basically, in any page where there are image thumbnails, you can click the semi-circle in the top middle and the background and colour scheme will change to the image you clicked on :) As I say, a daft toy but what the hell. I like it :) Here's some thumbnails to play around with: -

November 2011, St Monans, Fife

One of my Flickr contacts posted a shot from here and I chimped! :) I thought the wall was a really interesting shape, so I added this place to the "must visits".

I was going to go a few weeks ago but a sudden attack of lazyitis had me bedridden. This weekend I decided that I was going. The tide would be in, the weather man made a prediction which, as it turned out was wrong but at least it sounded about perfect. So I set my alarm for 5am and headed out at about 5:30am.

I arrived nice an early and was able to start shooting before the big yella fella even hit the horizon.

I also bumped into a couple of Flickerites who had the same idea so that gave us all a chance to chat while shooting which was nice.

Anyhoo, below you'll see the shots in the order they where taken.

St Monans Before Sunrise
St Monans #2
St Monans #3
St Monans #4
St Monans #5
St Monans Mono
Moody St Monans

November 2011, Ferny Ness

I've been really lazy of late, struggling to find the energy for getting out with the camera. I'd meant to go to a different location in the morning but couldn't drag myself out of bed at 5am and this looked to be about as nice a spot as I could get to with little planning.

I packed some bites and headed out to Longniddry.

I spent an hour taking what amounted to 7 shots, of which there are four I thought worth posting. My favourite is probably the last shot of the night.

Unfortunately they all more or less suffer from dirty filters. They got splashed a bit and I didn't do a particularly good job cleaning them :(
